O Moama is an in-house jewelry brand created by design studio Studio Monana. The brand is named after Ma A'mei, the cleaning auntie who has been with us since the studio was founded. She is a woman who came to Shanghai to work while accompanying her daughter during her studies. Independent, sunny, and confident, she always keeps the studio impeccably tidy and shows curiosity about everything. We all adore her. As we grew closer, she occasionally joined in the handmade activities at the studio. One day, out of interest, she started stringing necklaces using ancient Chinese stone-carved jade pendants the studio had been researching, along with some collected handmade beads. She made one for each of us. To all of us, Ma A'mei is like a mother. We often feel inspired and comforted by her presence. One day, it occurred to us that the craft culture we are exploring also carries a motherly role: a kind of beauty that is passed down through generations of women’s making and wearing—a beauty that is ageless, lively, generous, and gentle.
